Usually filled with sub-zero temperatures and heavy crystallized precipitation, this year has felt nearly tropical. Heaters relax and seldom run. Vehicles are mostly clean and saltless. Frosty’s lifespan would be short in 2012.

Despite the relatively mild temperatures, a weekend on the couch in front of the television is still in order before all the white stuff is gone. Thus it’s time again for the Digital Ubiquitous Film Festival – DUFF for short.

For those playing along at home – which is the point – DUFF is an online film festival. Participants suggest movies available on Nexflix Streaming. The schedule is posted on this site the week of DUFF. Attendees watch the films in the comfort of their own homes and discuss via social media.

DUFF is in its third year and runs February 10-12. However, DUFF needs film submissions to succeed. What flicks are in your Netflix queue that you want to enjoy with others? What independent film or documentary did you miss at your local film festival that you’ve needed an excuse to watch? Submit your entries by Monday, February 6 at 6 p.m. The schedule will be available on this site February 7. We tend to focus on smaller-budget films, but try to find something for everyone.

You can submit entries in the comments section of this post or through Twitter and Facebook. Feel free to request a general time for the film as well (ex Friday late evening).

Tomorrow, some of the largest websites in the world – including Wikipedia, Reddit, and BoingBoing - will “Go Black.” Their content blocked to protest two bills – the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in Congress and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate. While the viewership of The-Dean.com is significantly lower, this website will join them.

SOPA and PIPA are laws designed to protect the rights of copyright holders. However, the laws are poorly structured. Tech-savvy pirates could easily circumvent the law while technology start-ups could be destroyed by the legislation. Companies against SOPA/PIPA include Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Wikipedia.

Recent articles have stated that PIPA and SOPA are dead in the water. The White House has come out against the bills and creators of the legislation in the Senate say changes are needed. Still, it is important to let your elected officials know that these laws are not acceptable.

To find out more about SOPA/PIPA, check out the links below. Otherwise see where your member of congress stands on these bills and tell them to vote no.

However, sometimes inspiration – and fun ideas – comes from others.

Author and friend Matt Forbeck announced his plan to write 12 novels – one per month – in 2012. From his website:

It may not be as insane as it sounds. By novel, I mean a work of fiction that’s at least 50,000 words…I’m a full-time writer — this is my day job — and disasters aside, I write fast, often between 3,000 to 5,000 words per day. That makes 50,000 per month eminently doable. Toss in the other freelance gigs I don’t plan to give up, though, like writing the Magic: The Gathering comic for IDW, and that makes it a bit more of a press.

Matt’s idea inspired me. Still, working a full-time job, starting a large-scale nonfiction project (more to come on that, stay tuned) and random acts of journalism limit my free time in 2012. So I decided a “shorter” project was appropriate.

So to keep my fictional juices flowing, I will write a short story each month in 2012. Some (maybe most or all) will be posted on this website once edited. Since I’m a last-minute writer, don’t expect them to show up on the first of the month. These stories could find their way into an e-book at the end of the year.

I will announce any stories posted here on my Twitter and Facebook accounts, so if you’re interested keep an eye on those. For my writer friends, I’m always looking for a good theme. If you know of any contests or outlets looking for short stories, let me know.

The time between when all presents are open and New Years resolutions begin. Kids are off from school. Work is slow, if you go at all. The weather is usually questionable, so most choose to stay inside.

A perfect week to geek out.

When friends mentioned they had off from both work and family obligations, I decided to join them for some needed gaming time. A day off turned into a week. With a stack of new games, movies and books from Santa, spending the week in full-on geek mode seemed appropriate.

G33k W33k was born.

Apart from consuming my newly acquired stack of media, my plans include writing (check back for some game reviews), web design (this site needs a redesign) and some beer sampling.

So join in the G33kW33k festivities. Post your plans below, or on Twitter using #G33kW33k. Join in the fun with family and friends, if even for a day.

After taking the month of October off from my 30-Day challenge routine, I am getting back in the flow in November. Keeping it simple, some may even say just write.

In past years I have participated in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), where the goal is to create a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. I originally planned to do this again this year – to produce another half-assed written novel with no background research that would sit on my computer for a couple of years until I got ambitious enough to try to sort through all the bullshit and edit it. Then I came up with a better plan. Write something – anything for 30 days.

Journalism. Short stories. Novels. Haikus. It doesn’t matter. Just get back int the habit of putting pen to paper (or more likely fingers to keyboard) and producing content.

So by writing this, I’ve accomplished day 1. Will likely do some more today, but at least I’m off to a good start.

Follow-up 30-Days, 3000 pages

Three hours. Roughly two minutes per page.

Before starting my quest to read 3,000 pages in a month, I was uncertain how long it took me to read the 100 pages per night that would be required. I started with some simple books and was able to complete my daily task in a little over two hours.

Then I decided to read some real literature.

While I love spending some serious time reading, committing this much time – especially when I was also going to the gym each night left little time for anything else. Luxuries like making dinner and keeping a clean house would not be allowed if I continued my pace.

I finished the month just shy of 2000 pages (1894). I used the month of October to finish off my goal of 3000. Better late than never.

My Doctor Who TARDIS t-shirt is visible under my button up. The guy at the table next to me is flipping between his laptop and his iPad. The far wall has shelves devoted to books and board games.

We are a society of geeks.

The term “geek” has infiltrated our everyday lexicon. People “geek out” on topics from space to football. A Google search yields results for anime, history, horse, wine and fishing geeks. A friend is a self-proclaimed car geek, while I have used the term to describe my photography infatuation.

We each have hobbies that interest us and we enjoy sharing with others. We all geek.

I have many interests that could be considered “geeky” in the traditional sense. I am a science fiction fan and a web designer. I read graphic novels and have an interest in science. I love to play board and video games with friends. I have many others including fishing, hunting and restoring classic cars that traditionally are more socially accepted.

Still, do I “geek out” when I walk into Gander Mountain? You bet your ass I do.

Hobbies are what make us unique individuals. Still, a lack of knowledge of our pastimes mixed with a fear of what we do not understand causes undo isolation and scorn. As a great philosopher once said: “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

This came to a head recently when a writer from the tech blog Gizmodo went on a date with a guy she met on an online dating site. While he was a nice guy, she was shocked to find out he was a wold champion at the “Magic: The Gathering” card game. This was obviously a deal breaker for her and she wrote an article about the shocking experience.

I am sure many wold champion anglers had identical problems in their younger years.

In response, Madison author and friend Monica Valentinelli proposed “Speak Out with Your Geek Out” week. From her website:

Sometime during the week of Monday, September 12th to Friday, September 16th post about what geeky hobby you love. Then, tell us why we should try it, too. Leave your fears (and edition wars) at the door. Forget about your latest rant. Tap into that well of positive energy and share in the excitement of all things geek.

Let us invite those who would stereotype us to sit at our table and share our interests.

So what do you geek out about? What hobbies or interests do you enjoy that others might have questions about? Add your answers below and tell people why you really enjoy it. Check out “Speak Out with your Geek Out” for more, or just enjoy the silly video below.
Time for a new challenge and a recap of my August 30-Day adventure. Being an extremely forward guy, lets start with September’s challenge.

I focused last month on body, so it seems appropriate to move to mind for my next challenge. And seeing as I currently have a stack of books from the library, this one seems easy – it’s time to read.

For those of you that aren’t familiar, I am a notoriously slow reader. So when I say my challenge is to read 3,000 words in 30 days, some might scoff. Still, for me this will be more difficult than my last challenge. A couple of 3-day weekends should help the cause. As last month, I’ll be posting results throughout the month in the 30-Day Challenge group I created on Facebook. If you are starting your own challenge, feel free to join and share your progress.

30-Day workout challenge

I decided early in August that a “workout” for the goal of this challenge would constitute 30-minutes of exercise. A long walk would count, as would a full-on gym workout. This would become more significant towards the end of the month.

The challenge stared slow, but picked up steam midway through the month. With a week and a half to go, a cold kicked in and took me out of commission for a few days. Since I called in sick to work, I wasn’t too concerned about skipping a workout.

I made short walks (1 mile) my norm as I got better before returning to the gym. Overall, I only missed one day, but still had some guilt.

So I consider my first challenge a success; working out 29 of 30 days. During the process I dropped 11 ponds and have a ton more energy. I had a few dates and thus a few beers, but felt good about what I accomplished. That being said, I don’t plan to stop hitting the gym anytime soon. Some friends who joined me plan to keep their workout challenge going, and I see no point in stopping either. While it won’t be my primary challenge, I plan to continue working out every day.

So many couches.

Those who decided to forgo a move are found relaxing on their porch or playing beer pong in their yard as the city around them degrades.

I decided to stroll though the madness and snap some shots.
